Understanding School Avoidance: Strategies for Supporting Student Attendance

Speaker: Steve Neff, Director of Pupil Personnel and Attendance Services with Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS)
School avoidance is a serious issue for several of our children/youth. Steve Neff will share the experiences and insights his PPW workers have gained over the years, explain how PPWs interact with and support students and families, and talk about ways CASAs can help encourage and support school attendance.

Domestic Violence 101

Speaker: Smita Varia, Acting Director, Montgomery County Family Justice Center
Smita Varia will talk about the various forms of domestic violence, why survivors stay, the dangers of leaving and how domestic abuse continues even after a survivor has left the home. We will also discuss how domestic violence affects children and other family members, and how dating violence can mirror domestic violence relationships.
